Is Sclerotherapy Permanent?

Are you tired of hiding your legs under pants or long skirts because you have varicose veins? Varicose and spider veins are not uncommon, but for some people, they are unsightly. There could be some health risks with them as well. One option for treatment is sclerotherapy. This treatment option is minimally invasive and permanent, which means that once you undergo the procedure, the treated veins will not come back.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of fluid into the problem vein. Once done, the treatment works to cause the vein to virtually dissolve. The solution is irritating to the vein, causing a reaction that leads to the vein closing fully. Your body naturally reroutes the blood moving through that vein in other ways towards healthy veins. As the closed vein dissolves, its tissues are absorbed into the body. As a result, you may no longer see the blue or bulging lines on your skin.

There’s very little discomfort during this procedure. Afterward, any pain you might have previously felt from your varicose veins may be eliminated.

You will need to follow some aftercare procedures to help support your recovery. You’ll also need to stay out of sunlight and hot baths for a few days after the procedure. For many who get this treatment, the results begin to occur right away, with the best outcome happening a few days later.

Does It Last?

Sclerotherapy is a permanent way of getting rid of varicose veins. However, that doesn’t mean that you will never have any varicose or spider veins develop.

For some people, varicose veins can continue to appear over time. If that happens, you can get this treatment again to address those problem areas. A variety of lifestyle changes, such as avoiding overuse of your legs, can also help prevent varicose veins from showing up early.

Still, most people who get sclerotherapy don’t see significant redevelopment of prominent, visible veins.
