Why You Should Get A Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with 1 in 5 Americans developing the condition. Fortunately, most forms of skin cancer are highly treatable. At Florida West Coast Skin and Cancer Center, our team of providers, guided by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michael Scannon, has successfully treated countless patients.

Regular skin cancer screenings are one of the best ways to be proactive about your health. Read on or call our practice at 813-877-4811 to find out why we recommend regular checks.

1. Early Detection Leads to Better Outcomes

The word “cancer” always sounds frightening, but with early detection, it doesn’t need to be so scary. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common type, has a 99% primary cure rate with Mohs surgery. With the same skin cancer removal method, local squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has a similarly high cure rate of 92% to 99%.

Even melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer, has an estimated 99% five-year survival rate with early detection. However, that rate falls to 71% when the disease spreads to the lymph nodes, stressing the importance of regular screenings.

2. You Have Certain Skin Cancer Risk Factors

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends at least an annual skin cancer screening. However, if you have certain risk factors, you may need more frequent checks:

  • A lighter skin color that burns or freckles
  • Blonde or red hair and blue or green eyes
  • More than 50 moles or atypical moles
  • A family or personal history of skin cancer
  • Age 50 or older
  • One or more blistering sunburns

3. Anyone Can Get Skin Cancer

While risk factors can increase your chances of developing skin cancer, no one is immune. In fact, patients of color often have worse outcomes since the disease isn’t detected as early. This is due, in large part, to the pervasive myth that those with dark skin tones don’t develop skin cancer frequently. No matter your skin color, proactive screenings increase your odds of an early diagnosis and cure.
