Have you recently been told that you need a skin biopsy? When it comes to issues related to serious conditions like skin cancer, it’s natural to have questions or feel a little anxious.
At Florida Westcoast Skin and Cancer Center in Tampa, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michael A. Scannon and his team ensure that every patient feels informed and at ease throughout the process.
What Is a Skin Biopsy?
A skin biopsy is a simple medical procedure where a small sample of skin is removed and sent to a lab for further analysis. Dermatologists perform skin biopsies to assess a range of conditions, from rashes to suspicious moles. The goal is to obtain a clear diagnosis so that effective treatment can begin.
Types of Skin Biopsies
There are a few different biopsy techniques your dermatologist might use, including the following:
- Shave biopsy: Removes the top layers of skin using a small blade.
- Punch biopsy: Removes a small, circular section of deeper skin layers with a specialized tool.
- Excisional biopsy: Removes the entire lesion, often used when skin cancer is suspected.
Dr. Scannon will explain the method that’s best suited to your case.
During the Appointment
Skin biopsies are typically performed in-office and take just a few minutes. The area will be cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. You may feel a quick pinch from the injection, but the procedure itself is generally painless. Once the sample is taken, the site may be bandaged or stitched, depending on the size.
Aftercare and Recovery
You’ll receive simple instructions on how to care for the biopsy site. Most people can get back to normal activities right away. Mild soreness and redness are common but temporary. Stitches, if used, are usually removed in about a week.
It may take several days to receive your results, and Dr. Scannon’s team will follow up with you to explain the findings and recommend next steps.
