Hyperhidrosis Treatments for a Less Sweaty Summer

Summer is upon us, and the days are heating up fast. It’s easy to get excited about it, but it can be a pain if you deal with excessive sweating. No one wants to sit on the sideline this summer, so what can you do? Well, if hyperhidrosis is slowing down your active lifestyle, then there are hyperhidrosis treatments available for you.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term used for excessive sweating caused by overactive sweat glands that produce too much sweat. This extra sweat can stain clothes, be uncomfortable, and can be embarrassing. Hyperhidrosis can be caused by various things like diabetes, thyroid issues, nervous system disorders, and even some cancers.

How BOTOX® Can Help

When you think of things that can help hyperhidrosis, you probably didn’t think of BOTOX. However, BOTOX is a great non-surgical option to help reduce and eliminate hyperhidrosis in the armpit. BOTOX uses a form of neurotoxin to stop nerves from stimulating muscles. However, those same nerves affect the armpit to produce sweat. So BOTOX can be used to effectively limit and stop sweating in the armpits for up to six months.

Why Not Undergo Surgery?

There are surgical options when it comes to hyperhidrosis as well. The goal of most surgeries is to remove the sweat glands that are affecting you the most. However, there are quite a few downsides to this. The process is invasive and could require a long recovery time. The largest potential negative effect of surgery is something called compensatory sweating.

This is where your body reacts to the loss of sweat glands by producing even more sweat in other glands that still are in the body. This leads to intense sweating in other areas of your body. So while surgery is definitely an option for some, it’s probably not the best first choice.
