How to Speed Up Recovery After Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a powerful tool for people struggling with varicose veins. Whether you’re getting ready for your first session or want to bounce back faster after your next appointment, certain practices can make a big difference.

At Florida Westcoast Skin and Cancer Center, our board-certified dermatologists – Dr. Michael Scannon and Dr. Stefanie Altmann – have decades of experience performing sclerotherapy treatments and providing compassionate, personalized care.

What Happens During Sclerotherapy?

During sclerotherapy, a dermatologist injects a special solution directly into the affected veins. This causes them to collapse and eventually fade from view as the body reabsorbs them.

What to Do After Sclerotherapy

Follow these instructions to promote faster recovery.

Keep Those Compression Stockings On

Wear compression stockings as instructed (usually 24–48 hours full-time, then during the day for about a week). They help reduce bruising and swelling and encourage better circulation.

Walk, Don’t Work Out

Gentle walking several times a day enhances circulation without putting stress on your veins. Avoid strenuous workouts, running, or heavy lifting for at least a week post-procedure.

Elevate & Relax

Whenever you sit or lie down, elevate your legs to decrease inflammation and discomfort. Try to do this for 15–20 minutes a few times daily.

Soothe with Cold & Warm Compresses

Immediately after your treatment, apply cold compresses to calm pain and swelling. After 48 hours, switch to warm (not hot) packs to stimulate circulation and support healing.

Protect & Care for Your Skin

Use a mild cleanser and moisturizing cream on your legs. Avoid hot baths, saunas, or prolonged direct sun exposure without protection for at least seven days.

Bypass Blood Thinners & Inflammatory Triggers

Skip alcohol, aspirin, and NSAIDs like ibuprofen (unless otherwise directed by your doctor). Also, limit smoking and high-salt foods. They can aggravate swelling and slow healing.

Attend Follow-Ups

Follow-ups are essential for monitoring progress and ensuring optimal outcomes. Contact your doctor sooner if you experience:

  • Severe pain or swelling
  • Red streaks, fever, or drainage
  • Allergic reactions
