What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an exfoliating treatment where a dermatologist or aesthetician removes dead cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz) using a surgical scalpel. The gentle treatment allows for a more even application of makeup. It can also increase the absorption of skincare products for several weeks since it removes the top layer of dead skin cells.

What Happens During a Dermaplaning Treatment?

During your dermaplaning treatment, our providers will use a dermatome tool specially designed to remove peach fuzz and dead skin cells. This handheld device moves back and forth across your skin to gently shave away the top layer. This process typically takes half an hour or less. In addition, a soothing product may be applied after your treatment to reduce any redness or irritation.

When Will I See Dermaplaning Results?

Many patients notice their complexion looks brighter almost immediately after dermaplaning, but it usually takes a few days to see the full results. As any redness subsides, you’ll be able to see your smoother, more even complexion. Patients typically get the best results from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart.

Who Should Get Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a relatively gentle exfoliating treatment, making it safe for most skin types. Certain exfoliating treatments like chemical peels or microdermabrasion may be too harsh if you have very sensitive skin. Dermaplaning is a good alternative for diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, minimizing acne scars, creating a smoother texture, and brightening your skin tone.

The treatment may also reduce the frequency of breakouts since vellus hair can accumulate acne-causing bacteria. However, if you have an active acne or rosacea flare-up, it’s best to wait until your skin has calmed down before a dermaplaning treatment.

Is Dermaplaning the Same as Shaving?

Many people wonder if dermaplaning is the same as shaving since both use a blade to remove unwanted facial hair. However, the types of tools used are different. The surgical scalpel used during dermaplaning can capture smaller hairs than shaving alone while removing the top layer of dead skin cells. It also removes dirt and oil buildup.

Does Dermaplaning Cause Stubble?

The myth that hair removal causes your hair to grow back thicker or darker is persistent but false. Patients tend to notice their peach fuzz growing in after dermaplaning because they can feel the difference after experiencing completely smooth post-treatment skin. Your hair texture and color won’t change, but you might be more aware of it. You can confidently book your dermaplaning appointment knowing the treatment doesn’t cause stubble.
